Chickadee Aviation began offering scenic tours out of Rangeley, Maine in 2019. In 2020, we moved to Portland and decided to open a flight school to share our love of aviation with others. As the flight school continued to grow, Chickadee Aviation finally found a place to call home at Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport. Currently, we have a fleet of 3 Cessna 172's, 1 Piper PA-34, and a handful of highly skilled instructors.

  Welcome to Chickadee Aviation, we are a part 61 flight training school offering instruction at all levels. From private, instrument, commercial, and instructor certificates/ratings, flight reviews, IPC’s, and recurrent training.

    • Minimum age is 16 to solo a powered aircraft and 17 to get a Private Pilot License (PPL) 
    • You must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
    • You’ll need at least a Third-Class FAA Medical Certificate (for the US).
    • Issued by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).
    • Government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s license or passport). 
    • Proof of legal presence in the country (especially for international students). 
    • TSA approval if you're not a U.S. citizen (for U.S. training).

     FAA Requirement:
    40 hours total flight time
    20 hours with an instructor
    10 hours solo flight
    Most people take 55–75 hours to be truly ready, depending on how consistently they train. Flying more frequently helps retain skills, which saves time (and money) in the long run.

    💡Pro Tips to Finish Faster

    • Fly at least 2–3 times per week to stay sharp.
    • Do ground school in parallel with flight training.
    • Use a flight simulator for extra practice (can count toward training hours if approved).
    • Study hard between lessons—your checkride prep will go much smoother.

     A Discovery Flight is like a test drive for flying—it’s a short, introductory flight where you get to sit in the pilot's seat and actually fly the airplane (with an instructor, of course). It’s perfect if you’re curious about flight training and want to see what it’s like before committing.  Cost is $155.

    Aircraft Rental: $12,600 (60 hours at $210/hr)

    Flight Instructor Time: $3,000 (40 hours at $75/hr)

    Books, Tests, Fees, Misc: $1,000

    Total: $16,600
