What Are the Requirements For a Multi Engine Rating?
If you already hold a Private Pilot Certificate, the Multi-Engine Rating is considered an add-on. That means you’ve already knocked out most of the foundational requirements. Now, it’s about learning how to fly a more complex aircraft, understanding systems and procedures unique to twin-engine planes, and demonstrating your proficiency to a designated pilot examiner.
At Chickadee Aviation, we offer an accelerated training program using our Piper Seneca, where many students complete the rating in just a couple of weeks.
✅ To earn your Multi-Engine Rating, you’ll need:
- Dual instruction from an authorized instructor and the proper endorsements
- A successful checkride with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) to act as PIC of a multi-engine aircraft
🚫 What you don’t need:
- No written (knowledge) test is required when this is done as an add-on rating
- No FAA minimum flight hours—but most pilots will need around 10–15 hours of multi-engine flight time to reach checkride readiness
If you're brand new to aviation and don’t yet hold a pilot certificate, you can still train in a multi-engine aircraft from the start—but you’ll need to meet the full requirements for the Private Pilot Certificate first.
